Meet On Q: 10 questions with Raven Wilkinson

Fresh out of her third year in the Creative Industries program at Ryerson University, Raven brings a young and modern view of social media and communications to On Q. With her experiences blogging, operating social media accounts, and planning and executing large-scale events, Raven has a variety of skills that she is only beginning to develop and hone as an emerging communicator.

Raven loves making genuine connections and creating meaningful content, and her finger is always on the pulse of what’s new and trending on and offline.

In one sentence explain what you do at On Q Communications.

I research opportunities for media relations, reach out to potential sources of promotion, contribute to brainstorming and idea sessions, and I am currently spearheading On Q’s new video series, which I am extremely excited about.

What does a typical work day look like to you?

The first thing I do is open my planner to the Notes section, and write down all the tasks I want to work on or complete for that day, in relation to my monthly goals. After that, I get to work! I try to work in priority order, but there is always something that comes up during the day that needs to be tackled. There are so many different tasks and jobs to be done every single day, and I love that I’m never bored and always kept on my toes.

If you could have one superpower what would it be?

I’ve always wanted the ability to read minds! However, I would want to be able to control when I could tune in to someone’s thoughts.

What do you do when you’re not working?

I have another job that I’m usually busy with when I’m not at On Q. When I’m not doing that, you can find me snuggled in bed reading, scrolling through my social media feeds, and/or juggling three 2000’s TV series on Netflix.

Finish this sentence. I can’t start my day without_________.

Stretching and cracking my neck. I have the body of a 70 year old woman.

What’s the most memorable campaign you’ve worked on with On Q?

I’ve been doing a lot of cool work so far, but I’m actually looking forward to the campaigns I’ll be working on in the next couple of months. There are some exciting things coming up, and I’m glad I get to be a part of them.

What’s your favourite spot in Toronto? Why?

I don’t think it’s possible to choose just one spot! As a Ryerson student, I’m always exploring different neighbourhoods in the city, and falling in love with each one. Just recently I visited Trinity Bellwoods Park and West Queen West, but I also enjoy all the high end furniture stores in the King Street East end.

What’s one thing that makes you a unique, but a dynamic team player?

I think my willingness to switch gears, and assist anyone with what they are working on makes me a dynamite team member. I love any opportunity to learn new things and gain new insights in the PR industry.

What are three words your co-workers would use to describe you?

Outgoing, Adaptable, Social Media Savvy (not technically one word but shh).

What advice do you have for young PR or communications professionals looking to break out in their field?

Don’t be afraid to be independent and find opportunities for yourself. Try to gain as many experiences as possible, and figure out what you do and don’t love. Then try to meet with people who have your dream job and work hard to get there someday.
