Meet On Q: 10 questions with Renata Cimpean

Renata Cimpean recently graduated from a postgraduate communications program at Centennial College, after completing her Bachelor’s at York University. With a background in English she has a passion for books and writing, which is certainly exercised in her daily work life. Growing up in Romania and always being surrounded by animals has given her an immense love for creatures both large and small and she looks forward to having her very own pack of rescue dogs.

In one sentence explain what you do at On Q Communications.

As the Community Manger I put On Q in the spotlight through engaging content on our website and social feeds.

What does a typical work day look like to you?

I start my day with checking up on our social feeds and seeing what is trending that day; it’s so important to keep up with that! Then I tackle my never ending to do list which mostly includes writing posts for Twitter, Facebook and our blog. On Q doesn’t follow a typical 9-5 structure (which I love) so I find a Starbucks or a cute cafe to get down to work when I’m not at the office.

If you could have one superpower what would it be?

Teleportation. Definitely teleportation. I have a lot of friends and family who live out of the country who I would love to see more often. I would possibly (probably) also use it for much shorter distances…that remote is just way too far sometimes.

What do you do when you’re not working?

I’m a granny deep down so you can find me drinking copious amounts of tea and working on a puzzle.

Finish this sentence. I can’t start my day without _____________.

Trapping my kitty into cuddles. He loves it…I swear.

What’s the most memorable campaign you’ve worked on with On Q?

One of the first things I did when I started at On Q is work on finding and securing influencers for our client The MBA Tour. It was really exciting to be directly involved with a marketing trend that is so hot right now.

What’s your favourite spot in Toronto? Why?

There’s a tiny food hut in Etobicoke called Tom’s Dairy Freeze. They’re only open in the warmer months and are known for their ice cream but I go nuts for their poutine. There’s nothing like that first bite of Tom’s to kick off the spring! And that first sip of milkshake!

What’s one thing that makes you a unique, but a dynamite team member?

I like to dip my toes into everything. I get bored if I’m doing the same thing over and over so I’m always ready to help a co-worker with their project or to bounce ideas off each other.

What are three words your co-workers would use to describe you?

Creative. Chatty. Let’s stick with the C’s…cheerful!

What advice do you have for young PR or communications professionals looking to break out in their field?

Don’t be shy! PR is a difficult field to get into so you have to work the connections you already have and make new ones that can benefit you. Another big one is to seek out internship opportunities and to take advantage of any that come your way…even if they are unpaid! Employers are always looking for candidates with experience and at the end of the day gaining that experience is far more valuable than a big paycheck.
